“Your Name” Or “Weathering With You” ?

Oh so the quarantine is extended in my country and to top it off, I’m spending it alone in a dormitory. Oh lala! But I fret not. In fact I am surprised on how well I’m coping with being alone. One that truly helps me right now are bullet journaling and blogging! All the more, I started to doing blogging collaborations for non-Philippine based bloggers. And here is one of them, featuring my collaboration with China-based blogger Libera Tarts!

Which is better from Makoto Shinkai’s famous masterpieces, “Your Name” or “Weathering With You”?

From the time we decided on this topic, Libera have only watched “Your Name” and it’s her favorite movie. Unfortunately , she missed the theatrical showing of “Weathering with You”. That’s the complete opposite for me though. In my timeline, I have watched Weathering first because a friend and a fan of “Your Name” invited me to watch it in theaters. I’m aware how popular “Your Name” is and I’ve been always curious but did not have the chance to actually watch it for years. This blog collaboration gave me a new exciting purpose to finally watch my forgotten copy of “Your Name” in my laptop.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

My draft of thoughts about the movie in my bullet journal after I watched “Kimi No Nawa”.

As Kimi No nawa’s story progresses, I couldn’t help but to see the parallelism of the story to its successor Weathering With You” .

1. Both involves teenager protagonists.

d06b00258eb886a2b2153e22ab7bcd07
Kimi No Nawa couple: Taki and Mitsuha

Your Name is about Taki and Mitsuha, ordinary highschool students living miles apart , found themselves swapping bodies one day.

8qmo7wvcqdf31
Weathering With You couple: Hodaka and Hina

Weathering With You tells a story about a runaway highschooler named Hodaka who met Hina in Tokyo and together, they put a business utilizing Hina’s ability to bring out the sun in a short duration of time.

2. Girl protagonist entangled in a supernatural phenomenon.

In Kimi No Nawa, both of them are involved in a supernatural phenomena. However, it was Mitsuha who has the heritage of body swapping running in their family thorough generation. Her grandmother explained that this happens because of their role as the caretakers of the shrine.

In Weathering With You, Hina was the one who possessed the ability to clear the weather. She got it when one day she was mesmerized to a ray of sunlight and followed it until she reached it on a rooftop. A seemingly magical encounter with mythical creatures happened and she woke up with the ability to clear the endless rain in Tokyo. She was later referred as “Sunshine Girl or the Weather Maiden”.

3. Both are detached from their parents.

There is a lack of parental guardians in both movie. Although in Kimi No Nawa, Mitsuha has a father but they are not closed. She and her siblings felt like they already divorced their father emotionally. and is not living with him. They have their grandmother instead to take care of them. Taki seems to be living independently even as a highschooler.

The same with “Weathering with you”. Hodaka ran away from home. No backstory or whatsoever why. Hina and her adorable brother “Nagisa” were already orphan but Hina proved to be such a dependable sister. She works on part-time jobs and is an incredible chef.

4. Girl protagonist has cute sibling.

In Kimi No Nawa, there is Yotsuha, always grumpy waking her sister up every morning. Sometimes she acts like she’s the older sister. She’s an elementary student. She also performs the family tradition of taking care of the shrine and creating sake through the mouth with Mitsuha.

And then there’s Nagisa of “Weathering With You”. Even as an elementary student, she’s popular with girls. He gives advice to Hodaka like an older brother sometimes. Nagisa is also with them during their weathering gigs.

5. Both has Japanese cultural and Shintoism Sentimentality.

In both films, the Shintoism beliefs were added to the magical realism narrative of both films.

First what is Shinto? Shintoism is a major and an old religion in Japan. To put it simply, this is worshiping the spirits of the nature. In Shinto, you worship the spirit of the wind, the mountainside, and the river. They personifies the nature and call them “Kami” or Gods. That is why in Shinto, there are many “Kami” and they are often worshiped in places like shrine. This also explains why Japanese has high regard to cleanliness as this is the way of being close to God and paying respect.

In “Kimi No Nawa”, Mitsuha and her family upholds the responsibility of taking care of the shrine and making sure that the tradition continues like offering Kuchikamizake “mouth-chewed sake” for the Gods in the rock cave shrine. This has a big role in the plot of Kimi No Nawa as their Kami forged the interweaving and links of time making their body swapping magic to happen.

Taki later searched for that rock shrine and drink the fermented sake made by Mitsuha’s saliva which interconnected their bodies once more.

Weathering With You also makes use of Shinto beliefs and is a big part of the plot. Sunshine brought Hina to this ragged Torii gate which is usually the entrance of any Shinto Shrines and the Kami of heavens eventually made her the weather priestess. The tradition also of praying and performing rituals for clear weather are Shinto practices as well.

A torii gate of Usa Jingu

6. Both get separated with each other for years before re-uniting.

In Kimi No Nawa, the couple reunited after 5 years of the comet crash in Mitsuha’s town. Taki is now searching for a job. All this years, he felt somehow empty but he doesn’t know why because both of them lost memories of their body swapping ventures. Mitsuha feels the same way. At this time she is now living in Tokyo. Their train met in parallel and instantly it struck a chord inside their hearts that they have found what they were looking for. They took off the train and simultaneously looked for each other. In this pivotal moment in the staircase, they suddenly had this awkward moment approaching each other.

Taki_Mitsuha_red_stairs_Tokyo_Yotsuya_Your_Name

Hell yeah! You could not blame them. They could not explain why they seem to long for each other so hard while they haven’t met yet. Good thing Taki broke the ice, turned around and asked if they have met before. Mitsuha quickly replied that it seems like so. And finally, they learned each others names with tears of joy in their eyes.

header-640x

Now for Weathering with You, the gap was three years. They got separated when the police arrested Hodaka after his successful reclaiming of Hina from being the weather sacrifice. They lost contact of with each other. When he got out of the probationary period, Tokyo is already submerged in flood because of the endless rain since the heavens lost Hina as their weather maiden. He found her one day praying for the Gods in the street. They re-unite and held hands with Hodaka re-assuring her that everything will be fine from now on.

5. RADWIMPS musical score.

Outside of the story, the emotional atmosphere were both performed by a rock group named Radwimp.

Kimi No Nawa – Just a Little More

Tenki No Ko-“Is There Still Anything That Love Can Do?”

With this similarities, parallelism, for me both movies are indeed masterpieces and each has magic on its own. But which is better?

Now please understand that this is my own opinion and I don’t represent any group.

For visual aesthetic of animation and musical scoring, I choose “Weathering With You”. But for overall verdict, I would choose “Kimi No Nawa”. I felt that the story of this piece has more emotional intensity. It made me feel the longing to someone I don’t know or haven’t met yet. I felt the emptiness of searching for someone who would fill the unbearable void inside me. In short I felt more connected with Taki and Mitsuha’s emotions and consistently so throughout the movie. In Weathering With You, I lost it somehow in the chasing scene towards the end. The chasing scene was corny in my preference.

One again I invite you to read Libera’s take on weighing Makoto Shinkai’s masterpieces here mostly on “Weathering With You.” It was a delightful read as she uncovered lot of points that I did not notice myself.

Lastly, I invite you to be my International Blogger Friend. The basic idea is to have at least one blogger friend in each country. In the Philippines where I live, I also have a separate directory called one friend in each PH Region. For more details, just go to this link. I hope you accept my invitation!

Are They Worth The Hype? “Crash Landing on You” and “Parasite” Review

Hi Friends! I am mostly stuck at home for over two weeks now as we mostly are because of corona virus outbreak. While I am pretty bummed out about it because we had to cancel our most anticipated dream trip this year, I must say I am seeing a light in this dark situation. I have more time to blog and to collaborate with my International Blogger Friends!

Jirah and I eventually chose this topic as we both have fondness over Korean dramas although not as much as her. Together we take a look on the two recent South Korean recent hits: Crash Landing on You, which somehow gave us smile amidst the nCOV-19 filled news. For the movie, there was “Parasite” which won “Best Picture” and was largely celebrated as the very first non-English movie to have won the “Oscars”.

Are they worth the hype?

(WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!)

Crash Landing On You

Yoon-Seri, a successful businesswoman, was caught in a paragliding accident and landed unknowingly in North Korea. Luckily  a kindhearted , handsome and low-profile rich North-Korean soldier Ri Jeong-hyuk  found her. He gave her shelter and paved ways to bring her back to South Korea secretly. Complication arises when they fell in love. (Awww…)

Gurezu’s Verdict

Before I answer the question if this series deserves the raves, I want to voice out my thoughts after finishing it.

I hated the ending! I felt so sad for the second couple. Why does it have to be so tragic? My Korean heart was crying. Seung-Jun’s death in the last episode is just heartbreaking. At the latter part of the drama, I became more invested in Seun-Jun- Seo-Dan love story more than the main couple. Although their romance was short, their dramatic scenes had more effect on me. To tell you the truth, I grew to love Seung Jun’s character more than Jeong-Hyuk. Why? Hyun Bin’s character is too dreamy, too good to be true. Such man exists in fantasy world. Unlike Seung-Jun’s character which has more reality in him (except the shootout scene. That was LOL)

He is not perfect . He is obviously a sinner and most likely a kind of person you won’t recommend to yourself and to your friends. But as the time went on, you see the kindness in him. He did risk his life to save the main couple several times even he won’t get something out of it. And his journey to desire in becoming a better person for Seo-Dan was just endearing to watch. It’s his unexpected character development that made him charming. I really wanted Seo Dan and Seun jun to be happy but well, the writer did not give it to them. So I really don’t like the ending but in a good way because it means the substorylines are also worth it.

I am not so crazy about the Riri couple. The acting is superb and they totally look good together. They have strong chemistry but for me it kind of fizzled out toward the end mainly because Jeong-Hyuk feel so unreal. What made me love this series was the unexpected camaraderie Ser-ri formed with Jeong-Hyuk’s subordinates and the nosy neighbors. Their antics and misadventures when they went to South-Korea made the overly-long episodes fun to watch. My favorite was the one who extremely loves K-drama.

To answer the question, do this drama deserved the hype? I would say yes! Though I’m not crazy about it, I understood why it was a hit. It has intriguing storyline and effectively made me laugh and care about their conclusion. The side plots are so good too. I also felt that people checked this out because of “North Korea” plot in it. Who won’t be curious right? We have read and watched news that North Korea is such a dreadful country. They launched nuclear weapons. There are rumors of inhumane and brutal execution there. Given that their country has military tension for years, I think the writer and the production just jump off the fence to create this series. According to what I read, it made positive reviews for humanizing North Korea and showed that it’s possible for North Koreans and South Koreans to be friends with each other. I guess the series was beyond love story and they tried to make a difference. So yes, it deserves the hype. I love it.

Final Verdict: 8/10, worth the hype

JIRAHLIZATION VERDICT.

WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!

Rating: 10/10

Worth The Hype: YES!

It was dragging at the beginning when Se-Ri and her family’s background are being portrayed. It is the usual feud of Rich Families over money.  But it gets exciting when Se-Ri, a business woman quite known in South Korea accidentally paraglided in North Korea and met a reserved-yet-honorable-no-connection-Captain-turned-member-of-high-end-military-family.  I thought the story would just revolve around Se-Ri trying to escape South Korea without going through Military Process. But that would be very dragging, right? Seri successfully went back to her home country with the help of Captain Ri and the rest of his team who have grown to love Se-Ri themselves. Then another half of the story unfolded when Captain Ri hasto s sneak into the South to protect Se-Ri from danger.

Since half of the story rolled over into Se-Ri continuously escaping the North while staying at Captain Ri, it helped us understand the life of a community living under a restrictive and highly authoritative country. They were laid back, far behind from technology, follows rules strictly, and yet oozes with loyalty, care and love for each other. I am fond of how CLOY was able to make the scenes lighter and mostly fun.  CLOY is unique as it is a story of hope that people in the North and South Korea can live harmoniously. It is not just a typical love story but a story of how a North fell in love with a South in a very odd setting. Their love story depicted how two seemingly divided country can also unite–someday.

PARASITE

This is a story of a family with no stable livelihood infiltrating the lives of a rich family household by posing as highly qualified employees.

Gurezu’s Verdict.

I have made a full blog entry on this entitled “Why Parasite Deserves the Best Picture Awards?” and I was the one who recommended Jirah to watch this. It’s obvious where I stand for Parasite. Since I already wrote a separate blog about it, I would like to re-state the gist of why it deserve all the love it gets.

1. Universal theme in a unique story.

2. No clean-cut good or bad characters.

3. Genre-bending movie

4. Technically flawless.

Aside from that I love how the director meticulously framed each scene and used the vertical lines to drive the imagery on the separation of poor and rich classes. Every scenes has meaning. It was deep but highly entertaining to watch at the same time. That’s for me the reason why it stood out in the academy even breaking the barrier of “subtitle-hating” audience.

And with the COVID-19 crisis, the movie proves to be more relevant. There was a heavy rain scene here in Parasite. Just like a typical rainy season scene in the Philippines, the poor family’s house got submerged in neck deep flood. They spent the night in a gymnasium with the other families that lost their homes. But for the rich family, it was just a minor inconvenience. It ruined the camping birthday celebration for the youngest member of the family. But the next day, they considered the heavy rain as a blessing to clean the polluted air. Unlike with the poor family, that event altered their life drastically. This build up the tension that lead to tragic conclusion of this movie. See? Just like in our situation today, you can clearly feel the contrast of the rich and the poor. It’s easier for the rich to comply for quarantine because they have the resources to live. But for the poor, it’s a matter of life and death. If they don’t go to work, they won’t be able to feed their families. It’s easy for the rich to criticize and call out the people who can’t comply. There’s a clash because the privileged can’t empathize enough. The lessons of this movie resonates in the society yesterday and today. And this is why I love it.

FINAL RATING: 9.5/10, totally worth the hype and the award

Jirah’s Verdict.

Rating: 10/10

Worth The Hype: YES!

Most of the people I asked who watched this movie said that they found this movie boring. It was because they thought it was a horror movie! That’s why you better read the synopsis before watching a movie to set your expectations. I wasn’t really planning to watch but since we are making a collab post for the International Blogger Friends, Gurezu recommended this movie. There were two families that depicts social status: Poor and Rich. The Poor Family: Kim’s, is living under the edge, struggling to make ends meet by folding pizza boxes. The Rich: Park’s. Their daughter needs an English Tutor. As they trusted the previous tutor’s recommendation, they accepted Ki-Woo Kim who posed as a graduate from a prestigious University. That’s when they infiltrated the Park’s.

It is cunning and devious how the Kim’s kicked out the current hires of the Park’s. Ki-Woo’s sibling, Ki-Jung, posed as an Art Therapist, and helped the Park’s son, navigate his trauma through art. Then they plotted ways to replace the loyal housemaid and the driver.

One word came to mind after watching the movie: TRAGIC.

It was all over the movie. The tragedy of how a poor mindset will really make you poorer. How they clung to the Rich and acted as if it is their own. The tragedy of how a Rich guy would frown and smirk at a Poor one because of their smell or standing in life.

Another plot twist is that the husband of the loyal housemaid is living under the basement the only the previous owner and the loyal housemaid know. When the housemaid was kicked out, she begged to sneak in the house when the Park’s were out of town.

That’s when the tragedy of tragedies happened.

The housemaid died due to head blunt trauma when one of the Kim’s kicked her to the basement so the Park’s won’t see her. The husband who is living off the basement for as long as he can remember plotted a revenge to the Kim’s and killed their daughter (Art Therapist Poser) during the Park’s son’s birthday party.

In the midst of chaos, Mr. Kim, killed Mr. Park, most probably because of bruised ego when Mr. Park continuously looked down on him.

It was a continuous struggle for both families. I can’t imagine how the families survived the trauma with what happened that day.

It effectively showed the wide gap between social statuses. It portrays the cunning behavior of the poor and the high and mighty entitlement of the rich. The movie effectively narrates the sick and gruesome details of the poor in Korea.

It was tragic. Real tragic. I and all 6 of us in the movie house was moved. We were laughing at some witty scenes and screaming at the thrilled and scary ones. I hope more have come to see the movie. It was tragic but full of real stuff and life realizations.

Here’s the trailer for the “Parasite” if you want to catch a glimpse.

And Oh before we end this blog, let’s take a look at the side by side pictures of actors that were both in “Crash Landing on You” and “Parasite”! Such great actors.

Mother of Seo Dan is also the mother of the poor family in Parasite. The uncle of Seo Dan is the basement man in Parasite. The contrast of their characters is just unbelievable.

In conclusion, Jirah and I agreed that they are worthy of praise and hype. How about you? What do think of these two South Korean hits? Let us know in the comment.

I’m inviting everyone to check out my friends blog Jirahlization.wordpress.com. She’s a Filipina writer based in UAE. She wrote the book ” The Book of Single (The Lost Testament)”. Get to know her more on her blog.

Why Parasite Deserves the Best Picture Awards?

It made history!  “Parasite” won the Oscar Best Picture Award! It is the very first non-English film to win in the academy. And having personally enjoyed the film immensely, I felt proud and joyous as well that I brought my lazy ass to sit and write a blog about it.

It’s so metaphorical!”

These are the points that I feel made Parasite appealing to Global audience, even successfully seeping through the audience who who does not like “reading subtitles”. This is purely my opinions. I am no serious film critic. And I won’t be comparing this film on it’s competitors in this year’s Oscars because I haven’t watch all of them yet. My sole credential was I love watching films too and I do recognize a good story.

Most of all, this is a spoiler-free review. I would discuss only the part of the film that you will also see in the official trailer itself. So you don’t have to worry.

  1. Universal theme but unique story. You don’t need to have an experience living in a particular country or living in a different time to immerse yourself in the premise of the movie. It is a story of two families in contrasting financial condition, the rich and poor. Simple as that. This simplicity, however, was enamored with such a unique storyline.

2. No clean-cut good or bad characters. It is easy to tell that the protagonist of this movie was the poor family. The movie deals with their journey the most. Even if the rich family seems to be the antagonist, they are not villainy in characters. Actually they are nice people. They could be entitled people but that’s because of their lack of exposure from how poor people lives. But they are certainly not entirely depicted as bad. However, I could not tell the same with our protagonist poor family. From the trailer it self, you will see they began to take advantage of the rich family by lying. But then you will understand where they come from. They just want to have a good life. I love this kind of dynamic in characters. In most movies, it’s easy to root for a particular party when there was a clean cut bad or good. And in real life, it was not like that. People can be both bad and good and it depends on our perspective in life on whose side would we root for. I love these kind of movies.

3. Genre-bending movie. As people have said, this movie is a hella ride of emotions. It made me laugh, sad, excited and scared. They say films that try to mix two or more genres together will likely feel scattered. Well this movie did it with flying colors. It made me confused along the way but in a very good and exciting manner.

4. Technically flawless. The classical music inspired soundtrack. The cinematography. The acting. Everyone in this movie was great. No scene was wasted. I have watched a behind the scene of this movie and I am really amazed that even the architecture of the houses of both families were made from scratch to fulfill the director’s vision of inserting a deeper meaning on the contrast of each lives. Moreover, the director wanted to illustrate the class division by using staircases and windows. So the architecture of the house and how it responds to sun movements was design with intention. The director even have a comic-book like sketches of each frame. I just love this particular detail of the behind the scenes . The director put so much heart and art on it.

For the actors, I can’t seem to pick a favorite character actor/actress here because in one way or another they have a spotlight in this movie. Even those with little screen time were essential.

To sum my points, the movie is both super entertaining and deep. The balance of these two characteristics made it a modern masterpiece.

It’s a milestone for South Korean film industry but also in the award giving body that recognized it. It just means they are ready to embrace wider ideas and concepts. I always felt Oscar were just for Hollywood movies before. It is only now I felt they are ready to go “international” as it should be. It is a win for Asian countries too. Maybe a film in my country Philippines would also break barriers someday. I am positive with that. We have talents here but seemingly lacks courage.

How about you? Did you also enjoy this movie? Who do you think is/are the parasites in this movie?

Boardgame Review: Go Money Heist with your Friends with “Cash N’ Guns”.

After robbing a bank, a group of thugs has to split the loot but they have to fight for it. Who will get the biggest cash?

I invite you to join our recent Christmas Party through our VLOG as we spend it by eating and playing boardgames. (Yeah that’s how we party!)

In addition, every year I sponsor one official game among my friends and with REAL cash prize as my gift to them. This year it’s Cash N’ Guns which looks like a money heist game. These are the things I love about this game.

  1. It’s very easy to learn . I don’t like boardgames that has complex rules. I like games that I can easily teach others.
  2. The playing time will last only for 30 minutes. Each round can only last for 3 minutes. Total game consisted of 8 rounds that’s why it can reach 30 minutes. In my experience, this is considerable shorter as some boardgame can last for 2 hours to conclude. I love that Cash N’ Guns is something you can play easily with beginners.
  3. Moreover, it is very exciting as it will test your instinct and your acting skills. This is a chance to point a gun to your friends for fun. This is my second favorite boardgame now next to Avalon (which I have’t blog yet)

This is some mechanic of the game according to ludogames.ph .

I just changed it to numerical form and added some tips.

GOAL of the PLAYERS: Have the highest cost of money while still being alive after 8 rounds.

Routine of the game.

  1. One player is the “The Godfather” or the boss. You can assign this within the group or I suggest the group play “rock, paper, scissors” to win the GodFather role as it has a special powerful role.
1

2. Each player will be given 8 cards. This will serve as the bullets. The three red card means you are loading a bullet to your gun. The five blue cards means “empty”.

Cash N Guns 2019_Moment(8)

3.Loot cards are revealed on the table. It could be in a form of  cash, diamonds, paintings, medicine (to heal your wounds if you got injured by previous rounds) or additional red card for bullets.

4. Each players will load their guns by secretly choosing a red card (with bullets) or a blue card (empty).

Cash N Guns 2019_Moment(2)

5. Godfather will  count to three, and on three, all players will point a gun to whoever they want to be out of the game.

Cash N Guns 2019_Moment(7)

6. It’s time to activate Godfather’s role! Godfather can change one gun pointing at him and choose to point it to other player.

3

7. After a pause to observe threats and measure the seriousness in an opponent’s eyes, the Boss counts to three again and anyone who doesn’t want to risk getting shot can “FOLD” and remove themselves with this round.

(If you choose to fold,  you can’t participate in the loot even the gun pointing at you is empty. If you choose to fold and the gun pointing at you has bullets, then it is a good decision. You may not get cash in the round but you won’t get an injure sign and try your luck in next rounds. If a player get three injure signs, they will die and permanently removed from the game.)

    8.   Everyone reveal their cards . If the card is RED or BANG, then the target who did not choose to FOLD, will have an injured sign. He won’t get any loot. If the card is BLUE, then the target who also did not choose to FOLD will be happy as he can get money in this round.

Cash N Guns 2019_Moment(4)
The X signs are injured signs. You will get the number of injuries base on the number of guns pointing at you and all turned out having a red card.
Cash N Guns 2019_Moment(6)
A player is happy because he managed to taunt another player to fold and go out of the game while his gun has no bullets (BLUE CARD)

  9. Starting with the Boss, those who did not get injured on the round will take turns in getting one loot card at a time until everyone has claimed.

10. Repeat steps 1-9 until round 8. Remember that each player only has three bullets as default so there are rounds that their guns will be empty. The key is to “see it through” base on your keen observations. There are also times that multiple guns will be pointing at you. If three of them are all “RED cards” then you are dead instantly in that round if you did not “FOLD” so you should decide wisely. Lastly, be mindful on who’s getting a lot of money. You can stop him from winning by targeting him in the next rounds.

11. After eight rounds, the game ends. Whoever has the most diamonds receives a big bonus. Painting value is based on the number of paintings collected. Then add all the cash. Whoever has the biggest value wins the game.

Just in case you’re interested, we played in Ludo Boardgame Bar and Cafe’ Diliman Quezon City Branch. Their official website is http://www.ludogames.ph/.

I hope everyone would try playing any boardgame. I got a lot of jokes that boardgame is “boredgame” because it’s boring. I don’t think so. Playing boardgames is really fun and makes you disconnect from digital world from a while. What I love about it is it gets you to personally bond with your friends.

How about you? Do you also have your own favorite boardgame? Feel free to share it away!

Remember! You are awesome,

Crazy In Love Lipstick Set for PHP 249.00 Only (A Review)

Can you believe it? We’re now on the second of the month of the year. It felt like we just celebrated “New Year” yesterday. Crazy!

To welcome the “Love Month”, I’ll be doing a review of this lipstick I found in Watsons SM Megamall Branch. The packaging is so “Valentines”. It’s red. It has a heart shape window. It says “I Love Make Up and Crazy In Love”. I’m not actually not sure at first which ever is the brand name of this lipstick or the name of the series.

to-upload1

It costs only P249.00 and already contains four lipstick. It’s affordable and intriguing enough. So I give it a go!

to-upload2

Interestingly enough, each shade has a name describing the characteristic of  every person who falls crazily in love. Are you fearless? Are you like a fool? Are you hot and cold? Are you addicted? Which one are you?

toupload4

Now it’s time to hop on favorite part. I wore each shade each day and I took these photo every morning before I go to work.

  1. Addicted: This is the first day and I started with a bright red shade. It is a matte lipstick but I didn’t feel it was heavy or drying on my lips. It’s fairly easy to spread too. I am not comfortable with liquid lipsticks because I am not good in applying it. However, this lipstick  did not give a the hard time.

On the other hand, it leaves stains in the cup. And it’s also easy to be removed by eating and drinking water. But then again, so is the more expensive lippies I had. So I didn’t treat this as so much of a BAD side.

2. Hot and Cold. Wow, this is my favorite shade even on other  brand of lipsticks. It’s a light pink shade slightly leaning on nude. It does not come off too strong but it’s not going to make you look pale. This is the kind of color that I can wear everyday.

3. Like A Fool . This is a chocolatey color. I don’t think I’ll be going to wear this one on a daily or even monthly basis. Aside from I’m not comfortable with the color, it looks like the consistency is different from the first two. I tried so hard to cover up my whole lips with the color but it was not happening. Perhaps this is just a bad lip day. After taking some photos, I erased this shade and went on the last shade of this series. I don’t think I can go to work with this one. I don’t want to look like a fool.

_3GD0349 (2)

_3GD0352

Although I can see myself wearing this in a costume party or Halloween party.  I also feel like it’s giving me a rocker vibe.

_3GD0346

4. Fearless.  And for the last shade, this one is in dark pink shade. I’m kind of convinced that I have a bad lip day because I also had a hard time applying this one. But pulled it off in the end. I think. I love this color too. But this is for the days that you feel you want to look bold. Not for everyday look for me but I could use this on a weekly basis.

_3GD0406 (2)

_3GD0395 (2)

And because today’s shade is fearless, I tried to try to break free from the usual timid poses and do it with some attitude. Pardon me if the following looks a little bit force. I did my best haha!

_3GD0402 (2)

_3GD0410 (2)

This is now my 3-pointer summary:

  1. What I love about this lippie series is that it’s affordable but the quality is great.  It’s easy to apply. It’s a matte lipstick but won’t let your lips dry. The packaging spells LOVE. I totally recommend this lippie. If there are boyfriends looking for an affordable gift for their girlfriends this coming Valentines Day, this lippie set from Watsons would be great.
  2. What I don’t like is it’s easy to be removed upon drinking or eating.
  3. If I were to rank the shades in this series, that would be in the following order; Hot and Cold, Addicted, Fearless and the least would be “Like a Fool” because I don’t feel like I can wear this shade as often as I wanted to.

Thank you beshies. I hope you enjoyed this lipstick review. I think this would be a start of more lipstick reviews in the future because of all make-up we have in our world today, I feel like the lipsticks are the most magical.  I’m on the lookout for the best lipstick out there.  I want a lipstick that is affordable, long-lasting, healthy and fitting for a lifestyle of busy women like us. I believe I haven’t found it yet. So I’ll be writing about it more. If you have recommendation, just leave a comment.

Remember, it’s not too late for everything ❤

RomanceClass Books Marathon

I’ve been reading these past few weeks hoping to re-instill the magic of reading books and inspire me to write again. Months ago, I discovered that an officemate is actually a writer from romanceclassbook and told me that they have upcoming writing workshop and I could win a slot. The condition is to read five book from romanceclass and write a review about it. And I thought why not? It was a good opportunity. I’ll be reading new books with added motivation that I would be able to learn more about writing. Two birds in one stone right?

I have heard of romanceclass before but I usually dismiss it. I am not into romance, may it be books and movies. I love “love stories” in the backdrop of action scenes, comedy, horror, drama or anything. But I am not into love-centric genre. So at first I thought taking this romanceclassbook marathon would be a challenge. But low and behold, and I found myself digging to these books. Mainly because they are mostly not as love-centric as I thought. They touch other themes of life like quarterlife crisis and adulting anxieties. And I love that there is “in touch with reality” experiences in these books.

Without further ado, here are the books I got for the romanceclassbook marathon.

1. Don’t Tell My Mother by Brigette Bautista.

Remember when I told you earlier that I have an officemate who is a published writer from romanceclassbooks? This is her book. I got in touched with her because I really liked her short story in the anthology book from our company’s literary club. And then I learned that she has a published book released in the wild so I immediately told her that I’ll buy a copy.

Don’t Tell My Mother is about 19-year old Sam who found herself attracted with the widowed neighbor “Clara” which push her to question her deep Christian upbringing by her religious mother. First of all, this story reminded me of three things. One was the character “Sumire” from Haruki Murakami’s “Sputnik Sweetheart” who was also drawn to a women 17 years older than her. Second was the indie film “Ang Huling Cha-cha ni Anita” who’s also about a girl falling in love with an older new woman in town. Last would be “Blue is the Warmest Color” . The film is something like that too although not too big in age differences but it’s also about a teenage girl falling in love with an older woman. It left me wondering if lesbians really has a thing for older woman. If you have the answer feel free to comment.

I haven’t seen both films I mentioned above and just learned the premises through trailers and articles. I admit I am not into lesbian literature. I am more of a fan of yaoi and bromance. I don’t know why but I know it started with me watching the anime’ “Gravity”. But still, I enjoyed this book with Brigette’s amazing way of describing things and feelings just like what she did in the literature anthology. I could feel the tension and how it is suffocating to live to the place she grew up with it. I actually have a lesbian friend with a religious mother. Not to go deeper into that but I somehow saw this premise in reality. But with my friend’s case, the mother still doesn’t know. Or maybe she already knows but just waiting for a confessions. Either way, I should not tell her mother. The title applies to me. What a coincidence.

There was this feature in the end of every romanceclass book where it has a lists of question that encourages Book Club Discussion. For this book, it has eight questions but I’ll just choose one.

_3GD5598 (2)

6. Right at the end. Sam’s mother threatens to send her to a conditioning camp to inhibit her homosexuality. Do you think homosexuality can be cured? Discuss this scene in context of nature vs. nurture.

Can it really be cured? I think not. Because I don’t see homosexuality as an illness in the first place. I find it hard to answer between nature and nurture though. I believe it can be both. I mean both sexes can be attracted to whoever in a matter of time. It is in the matter of their choices, limitation, preferences and happenings in their life. The point is I really don’t see homosexuality as an illness and it does not need a cure.

Final Verdict: Genre is not my cup of tea but I love the narrative and delivery. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

2. Playing Autumn by “Mina V. Esguerra”

2-2.jpg

Haley Reese met her ultimate childhood celebrity crush Oliver Cabrera which inspired her to be a musician herself. The better news, they are heading to the same destination as they are both picked as mentors in the same music festival. The best news, he sits next to her in the flight and actually initiated the conversation.

Good points. The ending is satisfying and super simot-sarap kilig to the bones. It was done just right without reaching the zone of “too good to be true” fangirl story. This has also touched the common adulting dilemna which is DOUBT. The moment of confusion of the path you should take, whether to choose passion or practicality. Feeling lost in the future. Among other things.

Well the story turned to being steamy. (Hot Hot Hot!) I was a little bit irked on how fast and how far their connection went in just whole weekend. But well, if you met your ultimate celebrity crush and he somehow returned the attraction, who won’t be vulnerable enough to give in?  If I’ll be listening to logic I won’t advise everyone with how Haley handled it. But if you are in her situation, I’m pretty sure the voices of logic will shut right up. LOL! I’m a bit conflicted about this. I am against it but I understand. Haha!

Anyway I just love how Haley snapped the fantasy out her system after the steamy weekend with hot Oliver Cabrera. I mean she enjoyed it but she knows the reality of the celebrities. So she did not linger with the fantasies. That what made me super like her.

I don’t know if this is a moral lesson.  I agree with the book that in life, we can connect with a person super fast like we have known them for life. The important thing is we should somehow  listen to our right reasoning. And also, don’t be afraid to go out of a relationship specially if you’re just staying because of security alone. This pertains to Haley and Logan’s relationship.

I totally shipped Oliver and Haley. I believed that even their future together is quite shaky, their connection could be very well established in the future if they work for it.

Final verdict: Love the ending. 4 out of 5 stars.

3. Welcome to Envy Park by Mina Esguerra

_3GD5616 (2)

Another Mina Esguerra novel. She really have a fancy dealing about quarter-life crisis and adults having uncertainty about their futures.  The protagonist here also ignited an instant connection with a crush. But at least this one has more logical reasoning and the intimacy stretched out for weeks.

Moira Vasquez just had an apartment in N.V Park, the fruit of her 5 years  in Singapore. But now she is unemployed and has no boyfriend. She considered her stay in the country as temporary while she figures out what would she do next and that might include leaving again for another country. Entering the picture is Ethan from the 9th floor who’s a successful IT consultant who somehow made the decision-making quite complicated

I haven’t gone to work abroad myself  but I have lingering thoughts about it. I like Moira’s 4 quadrant hobby because I think I do it myself.  Her thoughts about the people she encountered in Envy Park and how she assess their life is damn relate-able.  Ethan got adult issues of his own too. He considered himself as “Leaf on the Wind” , just going with the flow, getting anything what is on the plate. I liked that in the end, these two characters stood up on what they really want. in that way they grow. I like how the book speaks about quarter-life crisis and somehow it made me feel as a reader to not feel alone in my own journey through it.

I think the best thing about this book is Moira’s friendship with Roxie. I love their interactions and their inside jokes. They have different ways in dealing with life but they compliment each other. This makes the book more enjoyable to read.

Final verdict: Love the ending too. 4 out of 5 stars.

4.  What About Today by Dawn Lanuza

_3GD5607 (2)

I picked this book because I love Dawn Lanuza’s “Boyfriend Backtrack” which I will review last because its my most favorite in this book marathon.  It is not at par with the wonders I experienced with “Boyfriend’s Backtrack” but it does not mean this book was a let down. This book has different charm, more on innocent kind of love. It makes you remember that magical feeling of meeting an interesting stranger in your teenage years and the awkward feeling when you found yourself developing a crush.

Gemma went to Funtastic World alone to celebrate her seventeenth birthday by conquering her fear of extreme rides. About to give up when an intrigued bored employee, about the same age as her,  approached and offered to be with her to get through the rides. His name is Aiden, and he seems nice.

This is a very light read. With only seven chapters, the premise happened only within hours inside the amusement park. “Cute, funny and cute again” That’s how I will describe their small adventures inside the park as they slowly opened up with each other. There’s nothing much to say about since the premise is simple and  the dynamics of the story is in the dialogue of the two characters rather than the plot of the story. It makes you miss the feeling where in you don’t have any idea about  relationships. And you still believe that love is purely magic.

Final verdict: If you want to  remember an innocent love or crush, read this book. 3.5 out of 5.

5. Boyfriend Backtrack by Dawn Lanuza

44030721_2404446449583363_9069668196851646464_n

I immensely enjoyed this book. This is the thickest of the five but reading this is just a breeze. I definitely see myself grabbing more of Dawn Lanuza’s book. Her writing style is lit!

Regina’s boyfriend of three years Kevin finally proposed in a posh restaurant. But a weird thing happened to her. The faces of her exes flashed through her eyes in that supposed to be magical moment.  She confessed this with her friends and was convinced that maybe, she needs to confront unresolved relationship issues with her past before tying the knot.

And wow Regina’s lovelife is colorful. She had a wide range of exes from an Emo highschool ex, to womanizer and doctor . All of which she had no proper break-up with. Her encounter with each one of them after the fateful proposal were both exciting and hilarious. To begin with, I could really feel that Regina is not much  into this wedding. And people around her, her sister and friends seems to know this very well even though she denies it. I felt Regina’s looming anxiety and Dawn has captured this with her writing very well.

I just became frustrated because the plot is somewhat similar to a novel that I’ve been working on. It’s not exactly the same but it also deals with the exes. And Dawn has written this very good. Feeling lost right now. But this won’t stop me from continuing what I started.

And because I love the book, I’ll be answering of all the guide questions.

dawn

  1. Is there a certain song that reminds you of one specific person? Why do you think this song reminds you of him/her?

Well in the book, that would be “There She Goes” by “The La” . I’m listening to it right now and I just can’t help imagining how this song was used in that particular  scene. Ahh feels so giddy again.

But okay the question is about me. What songs that reminds me of one specific person? Well, I have an answer for that. That would be ” Here There and Everywhere” by The Beatles. I don’t know this song until someone sang this to me over the phone. I don’t know whenever I hear this song, it creeps me that I somehow remember how I feel back then.  Like a time machine. That maybe on that time I was truly adored and loved. Maybe. I’m not sure. And I don’t care if its real anymore. But somehow, this song makes me feel that way. And that’s why I don’t want to hear thing song again.

2. Do you think it’s wise to revisit your past to create a better future for yourself ?

Yes! Like Regina, you need to re-visit and conquered the past. Because if you can’t deal and accept, I believe any suppressed feeling will just carry on in the future. And it will destroy your inner peace.

3. I won’t type the question anymore because its too long. But my answer is simple  NO.

4. Do you think the person you were ten years ago would be happy with who you become now?

Oh no, this question. I don’t think she’ll be happy. Maybe she’ll be shocked with the things I was able to do or what I have become. But she’ll be definitely sad because this is not the life she imagined ten years from now. Sorry self.

But I’ll do my best. At least I am a better person and I don’t get in much trouble through the years. And I still have many opportunities to expand my horizon. And just like Regina, I’ll be courageous to start all over again if I have to.

5. If you would be given a chance to take a step back from your life, where would you want to do it? Why?

I think I would want to go back in Highschool. I would take care more of myself. I would be more sociable. I would take in-charge of my life. I would have concentrated to develop skills. I would have been braver. That’s all.

Wew! That’s it! Finally! My final verdict to this books is a “must-grab”. It will entertain you but will leave you thinking about your life in general, not just relationship.

Dawn Lanuza and your books, wait for me because I’ll be reading more of your works.

Final Verdict: What a joyful emotional ride. 4.5 out of 5 stars!!!

And yes, that concludes my book-marathon. I am proud of myself that I finally manage to read books amidst my social media addiction.  I am definitely inspired to write again. Time to pass to this reviews. Will I get a slot? I hope so. But no matter what, I won’t stop reading romanceclassbook! #SupportLocal, that’s my advocacy.
